My story “Cleveland National Forest Field Trip” in Briefly Write begins, “I’m crouching on the forest floor studying a rock while Rachel tells the other kids that my nose is too big…”
The image that began this story was the tree stump of a giant sequoia tree at Mount Madonna, where the YMCA summer camp I attended spent one night a week. I was very lonely in the midst of a group of kids, and this story is about what that loneliness would have looked like, taken to the extreme.
